Could You Be a Foster Parent?

Fostering a dog or cat is one of the most rewarding ways you can help animals in need—and it makes a life-changing difference.

By welcoming a foster pet into your home, you immediately free up valuable space in the shelter, allowing another animal to be rescued. Even more importantly, you’re giving that pet a break from what can be a stressful and overwhelming environment. In a home, they can relax, feel safe, and begin to show their true personality.

Some animals struggle in kennels, especially those who may be nervous or have come from difficult backgrounds. In foster care, they often become more confident, learn to trust again, and develop social skills. You’ll also get to know them on a deeper level—whether they’re house-trained, how they behave around children or other animals, their favourite games, and all their unique little quirks.

As a foster parent, you play a vital role in helping us match pets with their forever homes. The insight you provide is invaluable to potential adopters and helps ensure the best possible fit.

We understand that fostering can be emotional. Saying goodbye when a pet is adopted can be tough, especially the first time. But knowing you’ve helped them on their journey to a loving home makes it all worthwhile. Many adopters are happy to stay in touch and share updates, photos, and stories, so you can see how your foster pet is thriving.

Things to think about before fostering:

  • Do you have other pets? How might they react to a new arrival?

  • Are your pets up to date with vaccinations?

  • Are you prepared to introduce a new animal gradually and safely?

  • Do you have children? It’s important they understand the fostering process and that the pet won’t be staying permanently.

Every household is different, some pets adjust quickly to new companions, while others need a slower introduction. Open communication with your family helps make the experience positive for everyone involved.

The good news is that fostering is usually cost-free. Most rescues provide food, bedding, and any veterinary care needed. All you need to provide is a safe, loving environment.

Fostering truly is a win-win: you’re helping a rescue make space, giving an animal a second chance, and experiencing the joy of watching them grow and thrive.

We are always in need of foster homes and would love to hear from you if you’re interested or have any questions.
